- Crawl up the rib-cage using both hands
- The notch where your two hands meet is the xiphoid
process
- Place the heel of your hand two finger widths above
the xiphoid process - on the sternum
- Interlock your two hands and push down 1.5-2 inches
(4-5 cm) on the sternum
- Compress 30 times then give 2 breaths (this is 1 cycle)
- Recheck the pulse after 1 minute (equivalent to approx.
6 cycles)
Lay rescuers should no longer interrupt CPR to check
the pulse
- Continue CPR until help arrives, an AED arrives, or
the victim begins to move
If Automatic External Defibrillator arrives attach it to
the victim
back
Each compression should be faster than 1 second. PUSH HARD,
PUSH FAST. Aim for 100 compressions/minute. Make sure to allow
complete chest recoil after each compression.
If you are doing 2-person CPR on an adult, one person does the
chest compressions, while the other gives the breaths. The ratio
of compressions to breaths is still 30:2. Take turns after performing
a few minutes of compressions.
If you do not have a facemask or other physical barrier and
feel uncomfortable giving mouth-to-mouth breaths, you may do
chest compressions without ventilations. |
